Troubleshooting ProTuff Tools

Troubleshooting Your ProTuff Net

Most issues below are a quick fix — find yours and you’ll likely be back up and running in minutes. And if it turns out your tool can’t be fixed? You’re covered. We stand behind every ProTuff tool with our 490 Promise — filing a claim takes about a minute, and a replacement is on the way. No hoops, no hassle.

NEW – Upgraded Modular Net: Dis/Re-Assembly

The newest and best version of the ProTuff pool net offers a number of key upgrades, as well as a more modular style in order to be a more environmentally friendly option – both in terms of warranty replacements and in terms of emissions due to shipping. By utilizing a more modular style, we can ship in a smaller package size, meaning more units per shipping vehicle and lesser emissions.

Our Newest Upgrade Features:

ProTuff is proud to introduce a number of new features to make our signature nets better than ever.

  • CleanRelease Tab – A weighted, plastic “tongue” at the base of the net bag. Grab this instead of the wet/dirty bag for quick, clean and easy emptying.
  • HydroFlow Vent – Especially for the silt nets, but present on all new ProTuff nets, this vent allows for more water to flow through the bag more easily/quickly, while avoiding a loss of debris. Less physical strain for you and faster, easier debris collection.
  • Stiffer, 3 Piece Handle – Using a super durable material as well as carbon fiber reinforcement, this is our best handle yet, and, the unique design makes handle swaps a breeze when it comes time for a warranty claim.
  • Beefier, Flatter EasyScoop Rim – With more of the front lip able to contact the pool floor, expect even faster clean-up than before. Plus, the rim is even thicker than our old model for even more stability and longer life.
  • Easy “Zipper Release” for the Bag – Nets wear out, no matter how sturdy the material. Why not make it easy to replace? We did.

Throw Away PARTS Not Entire Tools

When it comes time for a warranty replacement, instead of just throwing the entire net away and replacing with a new one, we can replace just the part that is broken, meaning less waste in the landfill and less pollution from shipping the replacement out (since it can ship in a much smaller package). But, it also means that there’s just a little assembly when you receive it.

Super Easy Dis/Re-Assembly Tips:

The 1st video directly below will help make sure that assembly is quick and easy, when your new ProTuff pool net initially arrives. The 2nd section/video following that shows the full disassembly/re-assembly, which will come in handy the first time you need to replace a part on your ProTuff net.

The process is actually quite simple, especially if you know the “tricks” to getting it right.

Pro Tip

The right screw, NOT at an angle – Three screws must be installed to assemble the handle. One screw is different from the other two. See in the video which screws go where. Also, be sure the handle “sleeve” is COMPLETELY pushed on before attempting to install the screws. Not doing so will cause them to thread improperly and either bind up or strip out.

Pro Tip

Logo Elements “Together” Facing Up – On the handle, you’ll notice our company name, “ProTuff Products” printed on one of the handle pieces. This piece goes on top. Then, our logo “icon” is imprinted on the sleeve. Be sure this is also facing up when you slide it on, so that our name AND our icon are both facing up. Then, install the correct screws into the correct holes.

Warranty Parts Replacement (Net, Rim or Handle)

Complete dis/re-assembly of a ProTuff pool net can be done in about a minute. Many tradeshow attendees have proven this to be true. So, if you’re having trouble, chances are there’s a little tip that will probably solve your problem. Here are a few to keep in mind, as well as a video to help piece it all together (see what I did there :).

  • As you disassemble the net, lay pieces in front of you, in an orderly fashion, keeping them in their proper orientation in relationship to each other.
  • The ProTuff brand icon on the handle sleeve, should be facing up, and should match up with the inner handle piece that has our brand name on it.
  • Be sure the handle is attached to the aluminum frame before you attach the plastic rim, to help properly center the rim.
  • When putting the plastic rim onto the aluminum frame, start at once end, placing the start of the rim about 1/2 inch (or a little less) from the handle.
  • As you put the plastic rim onto the frame, use one hand to ‘lead’ and ‘position’ the rim and the other to push it on. This will help avoid having the ‘teeth’ slip behind the frame, slowing you down.
  • Lastly, once you’ve got the rim positioned on the frame, don’t forget to make one last quick pass, to make sure the aluminum frame is fully inserted up into the plastic rim.

What Should the “Turned Front Lip” Look Like?

When you receive your new ProTuff pool rake/net, you may think, at first, that it has some sort of defect. The front lip is “turned out” and, in so doing, you’ll see, on the underside of the rake, that the plastic rim and the aluminum frame appear as if they are a bit “separated” near the corners.

I promise that this is not a design defect or shipping damage. It is part of the manufacturing process. As we turn that lip outward, it creates a situation where it is quite impossible for the rim/frame to remain absolutely tight near the front left and right “corners”.

Good to Know

Do not worry about it. It’s not broken, and it is not going to break easier because of it. Every one of our rakes ship this way and most customers get 3-5 seasons out of a rake before needing a free replacement under warranty. But, IF you ever had a problem with it, you are completely covered under warranty. Promise.

Please see the video below to see exactly what your rake SHOULD look like so you can verify that what you are seeing is typical (maybe you actually DID receive a rake with a defect or shipping damage, in which case you can simply submit a warranty claim, and we’ll hook you up.

Most Efficient Pool Rake/Net Technique

You will find that, with a pool pro-style rake, like the ProTuff unit, trying to utilize the “scraping motion” that is most often used with residential-style rakes will not be efficient. ProTuff customers, like the pool pros that use our rakes, find that they are 2-3X more efficient using more of a “tight push-broom” technique with our rake.

The Technique

You’re using short forward strokes where you give a quick forward stroke, a slight lift of the rake, a short pull back toward yourself, back to the floor, and then another forward motion. Think of how a push broom is most efficiently used, and we’re describing the same motion, but with somewhat shorter strokes.

The first forward motion stirs the debris just a bit by creating a small “water eddy”. Then, the second forward stroke catches all of that debris that was stirred up on the first stroke. You can see the technique shown in the video below. It sounds much more complicated than it is. Most customers get VERY comfortable with the motion quite quickly, and, once they do, they find they can clean the bottom of the pool much more quickly than they ever have before.

V-Clip Butterfly Clip Replacement

If you have broken or lost your V-clip (butterfly clip) or your rake arrived with a broken or missing V-clip, be sure to submit a warranty claim so that we can send you a replacement, free of charge. But, if there is potentially any confusion over exactly how to remove and/or re-install the V-clip, the video below shows how it is done.

Other Issues: Holes, Breaks, Bends, Etc.

Anything else that is a defect or damage (whether our fault, your fault, or nobody’s fault) falls under the ProTuff unlimited replacement or refund warranty. So, if you’ve got any of the following:

All of this is covered under warranty:
  • A hole in your net
  • A ripped, torn, or separated seam
  • The netting is coming away from the rim
  • The plastic rim is broken or degraded
  • The aluminum frame is bent or broken
  • The handle is broken
  • There is a part missing (such as the V-clip
  • Any other damage or defect

Please file a warranty claim so that we can get you taken care of as quickly as possible. The claims process takes just a couple of minutes and is completely automated. You could have a new item or replacement shipped out to you today – completely free of charge.

Still stuck? You’re covered.

We’d rather replace your tool than leave you frustrated. Filing a claim is quick and easy — most are approved automatically — or register your warranty so you’re set for next time.
