Open when daily highs are consistently between 65°F and 70°F. Not when it hits 70 once. Consistently.
The most common timing mistake is waiting too long. Once temperatures regularly exceed 70°F, algae gets a multi-week head start. By the time you pull the cover, you’re looking at green water — which means significantly more chemicals, more filtering time, and more frustration.

This is the step most people rush through. Debris entering the water before filtration and chemical treatment will deplete chlorine, clog the filter, and stain surfaces. Do this right and every step after it goes smoother.
Clean the Winter Cover
Use a cover pump to remove standing water, then clear off leaves and debris with a deep-bag leaf rake. This prevents accumulated material from dumping into your pool water during cover removal. Skim, Vacuum, Brush — In That Order

Reconnect and Prepare Your Equipment
Remove Winterizing Plugs and Reinstall Drain Plugs
Remove all winterizing plugs from skimmers, return lines, and cleaner lines. Then reinstall all equipment drain plugs — use Teflon tape or thread sealant on threads. Missing this step causes leaks and air locks that can take hours to diagnose.
