What Is Backwashing and Why Does It Matter?

Backwashing is the process of reversing water flow through your pool filter to dislodge trapped dirt and debris from the filter media — whether that is sand or diatomaceous earth (D.E.) — and flush it out through a waste line. Think of it as unclogging a vacuum: once the bag is full, the machine stops working efficiently. Your filter is no different.

During normal operation, your pool pump pushes water through the filter media from top to bottom. Over time, dirt accumulates and restricts flow. Backwashing reverses the direction — water flows from bottom to top — which lifts and separates the packed debris, carrying it out through the waste port instead of back into your pool.

Skip backwashing and the consequences compound quickly. High internal pressure puts undue strain on your pump motor, shortening its lifespan and reducing energy efficiency. Clogged media creates stagnant zones in your pool that become breeding grounds for bacteria and algae. How to Backwash a Sand Filter (Brand-by-Brand)

Sand filters use silica sand as their filtration media and rely on a multiport valve (MPV) with positions including Filter, Backwash, Rinse, and Waste. The core process is similar across brands, but valve operation, timing, and rinse procedures vary. Find your brand below and follow those specific steps.

If you have a Hayward S-Series (S244T, S180T)

The Hayward S-Series uses a Vari-Flo multiport valve. The handle must be depressed before rotating to a new position.

Turn off the pump

Wait until the motor comes to a complete stop before proceeding.

Set valve to BACKWASH

Depress the Vari-Flo valve handle and rotate it to the BACKWASH position.

Run the pump for 2 minutes

Turn on the pump and backwash for approximately 2 minutes, or until the water in the sight glass runs clear.

Rinse for 30-60 seconds

If you have a Jandy JS or SF Series

Jandy sand filters include an additional step: opening the pressure release valve on top of the filter tank during the backwash cycle. This prevents air lock and ensures proper water flow through the media.

How to Backwash a D.E. Filter (Brand-by-Brand)

Diatomaceous earth filters provide the finest filtration available for residential pools — down to 3-5 microns. The key difference from sand filter backwashing: every D.E. filter must be recharged with fresh D.E. powder after backwashing. Skip the recharge and you will damage the internal grids within minutes.

Always Recharge After Backwashing

Running a D.E. filter without a fresh powder charge for more than two minutes will damage the internal grids as dirt becomes embedded directly into the fabric. D.E. grid replacement sets typically cost $100 to $150. Never skip the recharge step.

If you have a Hayward Pro-Grid (DE2420, DE4820)

The Pro-Grid is a vertical D.E. filter and uses a standard multiport or push-pull valve. If your model has a 6-position valve, you will have a RINSE option.

Wait for the motor to stop completely.

Set the valve to BACKWASH, then turn on the pump. Run for approximately 2 minutes or until the waste water runs clear.

Mix the recommended amount of D.E. powder with water in a bucket to create a milky slurry. With the pump running in FILTER mode, slowly pour the slurry into the pool skimmer. The pump will distribute the D.E. evenly across the internal grids.

If you have a Hayward Perflex (EC-50)

The Perflex is unique — it does not use a standard multiport valve for backwashing. Instead, it uses a “Bump” handle that mechanically shakes debris off the internal Flex-Tubes. The process is quite different from other D.E. filters.

Make sure the motor has stopped completely before proceeding.

Bump the handle 8 times

Move the Bump Handle down slowly, then pull it back up briskly. Repeat this motion 8 times. This knocks the dirty D.E. off the Flex-Tubes and into the bottom of the tank.

Drain the dirty D.E.

Open the filter drain and vent valve to allow the dirty D.E. to empty out of the tank.

Flush the tank

Run the pump for about 5 seconds to flush remaining debris from the tank, then close the drain.

Recharge with 5 lbs of D.E.

Restart the pump, mix 5 lbs of D.E. powder (for the EC-50) into a slurry with water, and slowly pour through the skimmer to recoat the Flex-Tubes.

If you have a Pentair FNS Plus

The FNS Plus uses a standard multiport or push-pull valve. The D.E. recharge amount is calculated based on your filter’s square footage: 1 lb of D.E. per 10 square feet of filter area.

What About Cartridge Filters?

If you have a cartridge filter — such as the Hayward SwimClear, Pentair Clean & Clear, or Jandy CL/CV series — you are reading the wrong section for your specific cleaning procedure. But this is important to know: cartridge filters cannot be backwashed.

Cartridge filters use pleated elements instead of loose media. There is no multiport valve, no backwash hose, and no way to reverse the water flow. Attempting to force water backward through a cartridge would damage the pleats and destroy the filter element.

To clean a cartridge filter, you must:

  1. Turn off the pump
  2. Open the air relief valve on top of the filter housing to release pressure
  3. Remove the tank lid and pull out the cartridge element(s)
  4. Spray each cartridge with a garden hose at a 45-degree angle, working from top to bottom to dislodge debris from between the pleats
  5. Reassemble, close the air relief, and restart the pump

Clean your cartridge filter when the pressure gauge reads 10-12 PSI above the clean starting pressure — similar to the backwash trigger point for sand and D.E. filters.

When to Backwash: Reading Your Pressure Gauge

Stop backwashing on a calendar schedule. Your pressure gauge tells you exactly when your filter needs cleaning, and it is the only indicator that matters.

Every pool system has a unique “baseline” pressure — the PSI reading when the filter is freshly cleaned. Abnormal pressure readings to watch for:

  • Low pressure (5 PSI below normal): This indicates a blockage before the pump — check the skimmer basket, pump strainer, or impeller
  • Sudden spike to 30+ PSI: Indicates a severe blockage after the pump. Shut the pump off immediately

Filters actually become MORE efficient when slightly dirty. The trapped debris helps capture even finer particles — it is called a “filter cake” and it is doing real work. Backwashing too often reduces your filtration quality and wastes water. Trust the pressure gauge, not the calendar.

Some newer automation systems take the guesswork out entirely. Pentair IntelliFlo VF pumps display a “System Service Soon” alert when discharge pressure reaches the pre-set clean filter limit. Hayward iChlor and AquaRite units will show a “No Flow” code when circulation drops below acceptable levels, which can be caused by a dirty filter.
