The recommended construction is a steel-reinforced concrete slab or heavy-duty HVAC skids set on a 4-inch gravel base. Composite pads sitting directly on dirt are discouraged — they shift, crack, and create uneven surfaces that stress your plumbing connections.
The pad should be raised slightly from the surrounding ground to handle storm runoff, but keep it within 1 foot or less above pool water level. Go higher than that and your pump will struggle to prime, especially on initial startup. Go lower than the surrounding grade and you will have standing water around your equipment after every rain.
