Why Fall Leaf Drop Is a Filter Problem, Not a Skimmer Problem
Most pool owners think of leaf season as a surface-cleaning chore. Net the leaves out, empty the skimmer basket, move on. That misses what is actually happening downstream.
Whole leaves are only the visible part of the load. As leaves sit in the water they break down, and the decaying organic matter — along with the tannins, fine plant fiber, and phosphates that come with it — heads straight for your filter media. That fine organic material is what clogs a filter, not the leaves themselves. Worse, decaying organic matter feeds algae blooms, and algae is the single most punishing thing you can send through a DE filter.
The result is a filter that behaves differently in October than it did in July. Pressure climbs faster. Cycles between cleanings shorten. And the same system that felt low-maintenance all summer suddenly demands attention every week.
DE filters trap finer particles — roughly 3 to 5 microns versus 10 to 20 microns for cartridge — but that precision is exactly what makes them clog fastest under a heavy organic leaf load. Cartridge filters give up some filtration fineness and buy back enormous dirt-holding capacity, which is why they generally handle leaf season with fewer interventions.
How DE and Cartridge Media Actually Work
The two systems solve the same problem in fundamentally different ways, and understanding that difference explains everything about how they behave in the fall.
Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring sedimentary rock formed from the fossilized exoskeletons of diatoms, a type of micro-algae. Crumbled into powder and added through the skimmer, it coats a set of internal grids or fingers with a thin, cakey layer. Water passes through microscopic paths in that cake, and dirt gets trapped along the way. It is the finest mechanical filtration available for a residential pool.
Cartridge filters use pleated polyester elements instead of powder. Water passes through the fabric pleats, dirt collects on the surface, and you clean the element by hosing it down. There is no media to replenish, no backwash valve, and no powder to handle.
On micron rating, published figures vary somewhat by source and model. Industry documentation most often puts DE at 3 to 5 microns, and Pentair’s own literature simply says “less than 5 microns.” Cartridge lands in the 10 to 20 micron range, with Pentair citing 10 to 30. The practical takeaway holds across every source: DE is meaningfully finer, cartridge is meaningfully coarser, and the gap is roughly a factor of three to five.
Counterintuitively, all pool filters perform better once they have captured a light load of debris. Trapped particles bridge gaps in the media and catch even smaller contaminants than the media alone could. A brand-new cartridge or a fresh DE coat is actually at its least effective in the first few hours of a cycle.
What a Heavy Organic Load Does to Each System
This is where the two systems diverge sharply, and it is the core of the fall decision.
DE under a leaf load. Algae spores are roughly the same size as the microscopic pathways through a DE cake. That is not a coincidence of scale you can design around — it means algae congests and blinds a DE filter almost immediately. Decaying leaf matter does the same thing more slowly. Tank pressure soars, cycles shorten, and the fix is a backwash. But every backwash flushes away most of your DE media, so you have to recharge the filter with a fresh slurry of powder poured through the skimmer afterward. In a bad leaf month, that cycle can repeat several times. Most DE owners name this as the single biggest drawback of owning one.
Cartridge under a leaf load. Multi-element cartridge systems carry enormous surface areas — a Pentair CCP520 offers 520 square feet compared with 60 square feet for a comparably sized FNS Plus 60 DE unit. That footprint absorbs a lot of debris before pressure moves at all. Heavy organic loads will eventually choke the pleats, but “eventually” is measured in weeks or months instead of days.
The trade-off is on the cleaning side. Cartridge filters cannot be backwashed. Cleaning means dismantling the tank shell, pulling out heavy elements, and hosing them pleat by pleat. It is a wet, physical, roughly thirty-minute job you do in your swimsuit. You do it far less often than you backwash a DE filter, but each session is more work.
If leaf drop has already triggered an algae bloom, shock the pool at dusk or after dark. UV degrades unstabilized chlorine at roughly 1 ppm per hour, so a midday shock can lose most of its punch before it finishes working — and a bloom you only half-kill is a bloom your filter pays for twice.
The Pressure Reading That Tells You to Clean
Both systems tell you when they need attention through the same instrument: the pressure gauge. Learn your clean starting pressure the day the filter is serviced, write it on the tank with a marker, and everything else follows from that baseline.
Manufacturer manuals set the threshold at 8 to 10 PSI above the clean starting pressure. Pentair’s manual states it directly: clean your filter when pressure reads between 8 and 10 PSI higher than the original starting pressure, and expect that buildup rate to vary with bathing load, temperature, and weather. Jandy documentation cites a 10 to 12 PSI rise on their bezel dials before servicing.
There is a second, stricter standard worth knowing. Because hydraulic resistance costs pump energy, modern practice on variable-speed systems recommends cleaning once pressure rises 25 percent over baseline. On a filter with a 15 PSI clean reading, that is a little under 4 PSI — far earlier than the 8-to-10 PSI rule. The manual number protects the equipment; the 25 percent number protects your power bill.
Hayward, Pentair, and Jandy all rate these residential filter tanks at a 50 PSI maximum working pressure. Pentair’s manual is blunt: do not operate these filters at more than 50 PSI (345 kPa) under any circumstances. A tank pushed past its rating can separate violently. Sizing for Leaf Season: Why Oversizing Wins
If you take one sizing rule from this guide, take this one: go bigger than the calculator says. Filtration area is debris-retention area. More area means longer cycles between cleanings, which in leaf season means fewer of the wet, messy jobs you are trying to avoid.
For cartridge systems in a heavy-leaf climate, target a minimum of 200 square feet of filtration area per 10,000 gallons of pool volume. A 20,000-gallon pool under mature trees wants 400 square feet or more — which puts you at a C4030, a CCP420, or a CL460 rather than the smallest model that technically clears your flow rate.
Oversizing pays a second dividend on the cartridge side. Standard-sized cartridge elements typically last 2 to 3 years. Double the filter size and you nearly double element life, to roughly 4 to 6 years, and with meticulous chemical care and two sets rotated in and out some owners report 10 years or more. The larger filter costs more up front and gives some of it back in replacement cycles.
Your filter’s maximum flow rate has to be higher than your pump’s output, not the other way around. A pump that overdrives its filter creates dangerous internal pressure and pushes debris through the media instead of trapping it. When a filter and pump are mismatched, size the filter up rather than throttling the pump down.
Auxiliary Leaf Defense Protects Both Systems
Here is the part that changes the DE-versus-cartridge math more than the filter choice itself: no filter system should take the raw brunt of the leaf drop. Whatever media you run, the debris that never reaches the filter costs you nothing to remove from it.
That defense has two layers, and the first one is free if you already own the tool.
Layer one — get leaves out before they break down. A deep leaf rake run daily during peak drop removes whole leaves while they are still whole. This is the single highest-return thing you can do for your filter in October, it requires no plumbing, and most pool owners already have the gear. What it costs you: it is a daily commitment for four to six weeks, and it does nothing for the fine organic material from leaves that already sank and started decomposing. Plug that gap with a fine-mesh silt net for the bottom.

A deep-bag leaf rake pulls whole leaves out before they break down into the fine organic material that actually clogs DE grids and cartridge pleats. Installation Clearances and the Mistakes That Destroy Filters
Filters are passive equipment. They have no motor, draw no power, and carry no voltage or amperage rating of their own — which is why manufacturer manuals publish no electrical specifications for them. What the manuals do specify, in detail, is placement and clearance.
Placement requirements
Hayward’s manual calls for a level concrete slab or other rigid base. A filter that settles or tilts puts uneven load on the tank clamp band, which is the last place you want a weak point on a pressurized vessel.
Pick a spot that does not flood when it rains. Standing water around the tank base accelerates corrosion at the drain plug and clamp hardware, and it makes winter servicing miserable.
Hayward requires 18 inches of side clearance on both Pro-Grid and SwimClear. Pentair requires only 6 inches on FNS Plus and Clean & Clear Plus. Overhead is the harder constraint: Pentair’s FNSP60 needs 86 inches of vertical clearance, and Hayward’s C7030 needs 28 inches above the tank to pull elements.
Pentair’s manual is explicit: position the filter and air relief valve so purged water is directed away from electrical outlets, circuit breakers, and other powered equipment. Water discharged from a badly positioned valve can create an electrical hazard resulting in death, serious injury, or property damage.
Orient the tank so the plumbing connections and the bottom drain plug are reachable for operation, service, and winterizing. A drain plug you cannot get a hand on in November becomes a cracked tank in January.
The mistakes that destroy filters
Four installation errors show up repeatedly in the manufacturer troubleshooting sections, and every one of them causes damage that is not covered by warranty.
Backwards plumbing. A filter piped in reverse collapses cartridge cores and ruptures DE grid fabric. The troubleshooting entry reads plainly: filter is plumbed backwards and element cloth is ruptured — replumb properly and replace the element. You do not get to fix this one by re-piping alone; the media is already gone.
Deadheading. Running the pump with the return or backwash valves closed spikes pressure with nowhere to release it. Manufacturer documentation traces tank rupture, popped tank lids, crushed cartridges, and cracked cartridge end caps all back to deadheading. A thermoplastic tank can separate at the seam. This is the failure mode that can be fatally dangerous, and the prevention is simple: watch the pressure gauge every single time you restart the pump, and shut it down immediately if pressure spikes.
Chemical feeders installed upstream. Manufacturer manuals state it directly: never install a chemical feeder or ozonator upstream of the filter — always locate it downstream with a check valve between the feeder and the filter. Introducing concentrated sanitizer upstream of the heater or filter is also called out explicitly in warranty exclusions, meaning the damage it causes is on you.
A positive shut-off valve downstream. Manufacturer guidance advises against a positive shut-off valve downstream of the filter or heater. If the system runs with that valve closed, the internal air vent stops working and, in the manual’s words, an explosive situation could exist.
Pentair’s caution is unambiguous: to prevent serious damage to the module fabric, never run your DE filter without a diatomaceous earth precoat. Bare grids abrade and clog permanently. And never change the multiport handle position while the pump is running — that damages internal filter components.
What you can do yourself, and what you cannot
Media replacement is genuinely DIY-friendly on both systems. Swapping cartridges is the easiest filter media job there is — open the tank and change the elements. DE grid replacement takes longer, involving opening the tank, removing and cleaning the grids, then fully disassembling and reassembling the grid assembly, but it is still a 1-to-2-hour homeowner job. The tooling is modest: Hayward notes that only simple tools — a screwdriver and wrenches, plus pipe sealant for plastic adapters — are needed to install or service the filter.
Initial installation is a different matter. Pentair’s DE filter manual requires installation by a licensed or certified electrician or a qualified pool serviceman in accordance with the National Electrical Code and all applicable local codes. Jandy and Hayward tie their extended warranty coverage to qualified installation as well. The manuals set out those labor requirements but do not publish regional hourly rates, so get quotes locally rather than budgeting from a national average.
Long-Term Ownership: Lifespan, Parts, and Repair Costs
The tank almost never fails. Across Pentair, Hayward, and Jandy, high-strength glass-reinforced copolymer and thermoplastic filter tanks last 25 years or more — theoretically indefinitely if protected from freezing, severe weather, and UV degradation. What you actually replace is the media inside.

One clarification worth making, because it trips people up: the “six months or one season” replacement figure you will see attached to the Jandy name applies to Nature2 and TruGuard mineral sanitizing cartridges, not to CS filter elements. DE powder is cheap: under $1.00 per pound, typically sold in 25-pound bags around $35. Alternative media costs more but goes further — cellulose fiber runs about $5.00 per pound and needs only 6 ounces per 10 square feet of filter area, and perlite runs roughly $2.00 per pound.
Repair parts are where the real money is. Individual DE grids run around $20 each, with complete eight-grid sets at $100 to $150 for common systems. Manufacturer list pricing on Pentair assemblies runs considerably higher: a complete FNS Plus grid assembly is $685.42 for the 48 square foot unit and $725.90 for the 60, with grid-only packs at $398.16 and $436.04 respectively, and a top manifold with air bleed at $237.27.
On the cartridge side, replacement elements for single-element systems run $30 to $100. Pentair Clean & Clear Plus four-packs list at $483.98 for the CCP320, $547.14 for the CCP420, and $694.42 for the CCP520 — with individual CCP520 elements at $313.85 each. Posi-Clear and Clean & Clear RP single cartridges list at $248.21 for 100 square feet, $327.04 for 150, and $408.16 for 200. Jandy catalogs its DEV grid sets and CL/CV cartridges by part number but does not publish list pricing in its technical manuals.
Internal epoxy patches on a separated or cracked filter tank are not structurally sound and will not hold under pressure. The repair is a replacement tank half or a full assembly, which typically costs 50 to 80 percent of a whole new filter. At that point, pricing a new unit is usually the right call.
Energy cost, indirectly
Filters draw no power themselves, but they dictate the hydraulic resistance of your entire equipment pad — which decides how hard and how long your pump has to run. DE and sand filters need a multiport backwash valve, and that valve adds substantial friction and back-pressure. Slide valves resist less. Cartridge filters have no backwash valve at all, giving them the lowest head loss of any system, and their much larger surface areas let water pass with minimal resistance.
That is why cartridge pairs so well with a variable-speed pump running at low RPM. The manuals do not publish annual operating costs per filter model, since that depends entirely on your pump, your utility rate, and your run schedule. But the broader source material notes single-speed pumps can cost homeowners from $50 to several hundred dollars per month, and that moving to a low-resistance filter paired with a variable-speed pump commonly saves 40 to 80 percent on monthly energy bills.
Backwash Water, Local Rules, and Separation Tanks
Every DE backwash dumps hundreds of gallons of balanced, heated pool water down the drain — upwards of 500 gallons per cycle, depending on how long the backwash runs. Over a leaf season with frequent backwashing, that adds up to a real water bill and a real reheating cost. Cartridge systems eliminate backwashing entirely, cutting water waste by as much as 92 percent.
The regulatory side is the part that surprises people. Many municipalities and HOAs ban backwashing DE into municipal storm sewers, sanitary lines, or onto open soil, because DE discharge chokes local streams and harms underground ecosystems. Where that ban applies, you are legally required to plumb a separation tank on the waste line to capture the spent powder — an added upfront cost that also occupies meaningful space on your equipment pad.
